PROJEK BABI was here in KL back in March but that was a really short visit. This one will see the band playing a lot of places, including Cherating, Melaka & Taiping too. If you like raw d-beat with Disclose close to your heart, don’t miss PROJEK BABI. The band features two very nice guys I’ve had the pleasure to hang-out with when my band was touring Java and also when they were here last; drummer Herusgn (guitarist of Bandung’s amazing HELLBÖMBS) and guitarist/vocalist Jarwo (ex-ZUDAS KRUST).
Ricecooker’s short review: SPIRES is a post-hardcore quartet from the depth of Oakland, California and the band is brutal, I kid you not. There are a lot of different strains of hardcore and punk of the last two decades in this, however they are all have been finely distilled and chiseled towards a more violent, pummeling and depressing end. Discernible DNA patterns includes “screamo” (not a hip term nowadays, I know!) but that’s only due to the emotional, screaming and ranting of the anguished singer. There’s also this sense of “epic” hardcore in the songwriting, which would verve between utter violence and serene post-rock guitar sprawl or indie-rock scratch; served inbetween driving juggernauts of huge riffages. In short, this is bleak but it’s fighting out of the darkness, with all its might. Yup! Pretty dramatic. Personally, I like the how the band mixes all these strains and managed to focus itself into such a lean machine, but I must admit, I do wish the singer would ease on the rants, calm down a bit and break into a stoner drawl or something less taxing.
This CD is a special worldwide release by PISSART (kudos to Mindless Show’s Khabir!), because there were only 500 copies of the album pressed last year, all on vinyl! So this is pretty special boss!
