Yeap and the gang off on their 2nd Euro madness!

Leaving Normal: Howlin’ Dave 1955-2008

Here’s the man who introduced punk rock to the Phillipines via his radioshow in the late 70s, he went on to inspire people like Tommy Tachango to form his band (Third World) Chaos and set-up Twisted Red Cross tape label introducing Betrayed, Phil Violators, Wuds, The Dead Ends etc. Howlin’ Dave also set up the Brave New World gigs, filling it up with Pinoy hardcore-punk bands that have become legendary in the Pinoy and also the whole Southeast Asian Punk history.

Younger scenesters of the punk persuasion may have forgotten the role played by this great man, but the legacy is all there for all who bothered to see. The Ricecooker would like to extend our utmost respect and gratitude to the Howler. Rest in Peace.

Howlin’ Dave was also credited with introducing Filipino radio listeners to punk rock and new wave music beginning in the late 1970s, through his program New Wave Nights. His choice to promote punk music was controversial among his fellow deejays and with his station, but his program developed a following, with spikey-haired teens soon showing up at the radio station, drinking gin and breaking bottles. Between 1980 to 1985, Howlin’ Dave would host the annual Brave New World punk concert, which he would close himself with his take on Sid Vicious’s version of My Way. - from Wikipedia

Crux: SEA Tour & Debut 7″ Available!

Crux is yet another Australian band coming in to sample the sambal of Boleh-land during their Southeast Asian tour. Unlike Cut Sick though, the young band is more on the heavy, frantic & dark crust leaning (a bit like fellow Aussies Schifosi, sans the epic drama) and they are bloody good!

Crux’s Statistics

more info: myspace.com/cruxhc, and check out their itinerary for the shows all around the region below. These guys are going for a long haul, starting in Malaysia, and going through Philippines, Kalimantan (South Borneo for the uninitiated), Singapore & Java!

Before that, here’s a bit of a review for Crux’s debut 7″, now available at The Ricecooker Shop, written by Ken S for MRR:

Dark, throaty, female vocals growl over four tracks of blistering thrash that slows to build a brooding mood before turning back to a fast assault of up-tempo hardcore.

While this Australian band has unmistakable modern His Hero is Gone-esque influences and occasional musical flourishes (and the chops to pull them off), something about the basic, solid recording and simple-yet-effective attack of the music brings to mind lots of great thrash and hardcore from the early ’90s - Disrupt, Deformed Conscience, etc. - where the intent was more influenced by hardcore than metal.

It’s refreshing to hear a band seemingly defining its own sound as opposed to “sounding like X,”and the lyrics have and introspective and thoughtful edge on otherwise staid punk topics. Cool.

-Ken Sanderson, MRR 296

9 copies are available at The Ricecooker Shop for RM15 each.

or if you’re reading from somewhere NOT Boleh-Land, the 7″ is available for $8 ppd from:

The Daighila Deportation Debacle: Some Thoughts

More insights into the recent Daihila debacle.

Here’s what our good friend Steve Towson (from the Brisbane based band Steve Towson & The Conscripts) wrote to me via MySpace:

Just read the article on Daighlia and their following comments - some interesting comments and some hmm weird thoughts…

I was wandering if it would be possible to write an article for Ricecooker about Immigration and Customs in OZ and what happens here for Australians and what Malaysians or anyone MUST understand from a basic rights point of view.

for example any more then 3 cds, cassettes etc of a singular release (eg. Steve Towson “Shah Mat” even if an Australian brings it in) is considered a violation of customs. For an Australian this means a fee; for a foreign citizen, it’s a violation of customs and reason to reject application.

Saying your are touring as a musician and not working is also a violation of a tourist visa as it is technically work and a person should be using a Entertainment Visa. Daighlia were lucky to get away with a slap on the wrist.

Entertainment Visas are complicated process, Ive looked into it $$$$$tousands of dollars to apply and you need criminal record and health records certified by your home government

anyway - that is a brief speel. Let me know you thoughts and if you see the Daighlia crew - pass on my sympathies and regrets, customs and immigration anywhere in the world are fucked places.

All the best

Steve

Daighila’s OZ Tour: What Happened?

When we got back from Indonesia someone told us that Daighila’s Australian Tour was stopped-short from happening when the whole band was DEPORTED back to Malaysia! What an unfortunate incident. This had happened before with Spunky Funggy; the band was stopped at the airport in 2001.

Daighila was supposed to be there for 10 days, playing Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra, Newcastle and Brisbane. Here’s what the band wrote on May 4th 2008 on their myspace blog:

“Dear friends…yes, we were sent back home from Melbourne by the Australian Immigration after being separated and interrogated for 6 hours and after being detained in their detention centre for another 24 hours. They ‘assumed’ that we came to find jobs and become illegal workers.

Despite the lack of proof to convict us and the fact that we’ve already booked a ticket back from Brisbane, they insisted that we allegedly came to find jobs like the other groups of Malaysians who were detained prior before we arrived. They also say they believe we came here to work because we carry small amounts of cash in our wallets.

But we explained it was a safety precaution and we had a bank account with sufficient money in it. We even presented our bank card. We also presented proofs that we have stable lives in Malaysia. But it was all ignored.

Alas, they cancelled our visas with the reason that we couldn’t convince who they called the ‘decision maker’ (whoever that was…) that we were actual tourists and we could support ourselves during our stay in Australia. As a last resort we gave them our friend Juzzy’s number who organized our tour. They called and told him that we explained he was going to find us jobs and they then told us that Juzzy explained he’s going to find us jobs!

Clearly they tried to provoke us to admit that we came to Australia to find work. We demanded a phone call but they said, “You can only call Malaysian Embassy, but nobody would probably answer because it’s already late.” We still demanded that call and they say we can call after the interrogation but unfortunately, we were never given the chance to call.

It was absurd and even the staff of the detention centre couldn’t believe what just happened to us. But they say things like this always occur….even Kris Dayanti was sent back without a reason once…hahaha. We took our chances, rolled the dice and got a little unfortunate, I guess.

Although we didn’t make the tour, but we did make new friends at the detention centre. If any of our new Malaysian friends in the detention centre is reading this, never give up!! To my Israelian roommate, thank you for watching over us. You never did give us your name. =(

We would like to show our deepest appreciation and gratitude to Juzzy, Shaun, Alex, Lena, Yeap, Lawrence and all our Australian friends who’s helped, waited, tried calling us, tried to let us out and everything…..we all did our best. And not forgetting our Malaysian friends who supported us, sent us, and picked us up at the airport. We really appreciate everything.

After all that had happened, whether it’s a case of discrimination, racism, or tyranny, we still believe in global DIY connection and friendship because no ones to blame but the discriminating system we are forced to submit to. Yet, we will never give up.”

The Annexe, CM: The Honeymoon is Over…

Hello good people,

Sorry if these pages have been rather stagnant. I’ve been sick since I got back from the Indon tour, nothing serious, just a long bout of heat-induced fever which was just starting to take hold when we played our last shows in and around Jakarta last Sunday.

Taking the train up from Yogya to Jakarta without air-conditioning killed me. That’s like eight hours of battling fatigue, interrupted sleep, red train dust and heat. Not to mention the fact that some smart kampung kid and his friends decided to stone the train halfway through the journey, and one big rock hit the side of my head.

Anyway, yesterday (Thursday, May 15th) I had a meeting with the Annexe’s management and crew about the shows booked at The Annexe. It appeared that a percussion group has taken over “the disko” where we have been doing our gigs. This means, there will no longer be any shows there. That is unless we get the new “owners” to work with us, but that would not happen just yet as we don’t even know who these people are!

There’s always the option of going back to doing shows at the gallery or the studio floors but such shows would need to be of very low numbers; i.e. around 150 pax and FREE entrance (as the management is wary about the permits needed).

The other option is to do shows right outside there at the main stage in the parking lot of Central Market. But then we’ll need to consider the higher cost of PA/Backline, security, etc. Not including the need for permits from the police and DBKL and all that bureaucracy bullshit.

Suffice to say that the honeymoon is over between the scene and the Annexe. It has been one and a half years, and now it’s time to find other venues. I would like to apologise to all the organisers affected by this change. I hope you guys and gals would find other venues in no time.

The Ricecooker Shop will be hugely affected by this but we’ll keep on keeping on. We’ll be there as long as we can hold the fort.

Cheers,

Joe

Jabat Erat Dari Yogya!

Kami berada di Gampingan, Yogja sekarang. In the next few minutes we will be playing with 5 local bands on the grounds of this art museum/gallery. They are Black Boots, Steak Daging Kacang Ijo, Human Chaos, Death Control and Black Resistance. Baru aja siap setup PA and back-line on the heavily graffiti-ed badminton court. It will be out in the open.

It has been a good tour. We are meeting with so many excellent people, right from Bandung to Bogor to Jakarta/Tangerang and now in Yogya. We got here on Wednesday via train from Jakarta, and have been staying at the Taring Padi house about 20 minutes out of town, in a kampung area.

Tomorrow we leave at 8pm on the train to Jakarta, where we are going to go to Marjinal’s house and stay there for the night. On Sunday, we will be playing with 26 bands in Pondok Cabe, a benefit gig for poor people in the area. Later that night we’ll play the last show of the tour in Kemang (where all the “bule” hang out). It will be a show with our old friend Chris band and their friends. It’s gonna be a mix of styles from psychedelic rock to indie and stuff.

On Monday we’ll board the plane back to KL at 8.00 am. And then it will end.

cheers,

Joe & The Dung

p/s: I know many of you are wondering about what gonna happen with the shows at the annexe. Sorry for going off on this tour without settling the matter. It was quite a hectic time all of us. But i will try to save all the shows booked when I get back. Sabar ya!

Friday, 2nd May 2008: Carburetor Dung’s La Tour TUA De Java 2008, Bandung

Carburetor Dung’s West Java Tour 2008 starts with this show and goes on for 12 days.

Three Big Shows in KL: Comeback Kids, Sick Of It All & Soilwork

Local visits by the more well-known, currently popular and hip overseas bands are happening a lot these past few months. It’s like we’re being inundated with big gig posters with too many logos!

Recently we got the more agreeable Horse The Band & Off Minor and now here’s a slew of bigger cats with frightening tattoos and cultivated snarls, including a second visit by NYHC heavyweights Sick Of It All.

Personally, I’m not keen at all really, but maybe some of you kids would like to check ‘em out. I guess it’s not easy bringing all these bands with a certain price-tag that goes beyond the the four figures, ridiculous backstage rider lists and make it all work. So whatever reservations I have about these bands, these organisers, these ticket prices, the too-many logos, etc. etc. I would still go and check ‘em out if the bands are right up my alley. But not this time though.

Check out the flyers below:
