Charles Bukowski & R. Crumb
The Captain is Out to Lunch and the Sailors Have Taken Over the Ship SOLD!
RM29.00

“Any collaboration between Charles Bukowski and R. Crumb is a notable event. Each man is a consummate example of the anti-establishment artist who calls society to task for its foibles and failures. With humor and scathing satire Bukowski and Crumb have exemplified this important tradition. These unpublished last journals by Bukowski candidly detail the events of his daily life, which R. Crumb has brilliantly illustrated with five full color hand printed serigraphs and six full page black-and-white illustrations.”

imageGrant Morrison & Jon J Muth
Mystery Play (Graphic Novel)
RM28.00

“From a thrilling, fast paced mystery story this mutates halfway through to become something far darker & deeper, full of psychological meaning & hallucinatory imagery. If you’re hoping for an easy read, with a simple resolution, forget it. Morrison writes a brilliantly open ended story with layers upon layers of meaning. By the final pages, you’ll be almost breathless.

Evocative, cinematic, and dreamlike, The Mystery Play is a multi-layered, tightly written & beautifully painted in photo-realistic style by Jon J. Muth.”

Grinderman!

I was introduced to the madness and the taut but unhinged power of The Birthday Party via John Peel’s Radioshow on shortwave BBC way back in the early 80s, and from then on I have been a big Nick Cave fan. I got all of his releases (well, almost!) and that includes trying to get everything done by everyone involved with Mr. Cave; right from recordings by Anita Lane to Kid Congo Powers, etc.

Here I would like to share my excitement at the new project by Mr. Cave, where he not only sings but also plays guitar. The band also features members of his Bad Seeds gang, including one Warren Ellis who was here in KL playing with his original band The Dirty Three last year.

Anyway, this is the first official video by the band promoting their first single, I Got No Pussy Blues. Enjoy!

This CD’s Too Big For My CD Player Lah!

Many years ago when my band put out a 7″ vinyl single, a kid from Pahang who ordered it wrote back to me asking me what kind of CD is that! I told him to ask his grandfather.

Anyway, I found this interesting video clip on the prevailing vinyl records industry, and especially on how they make records. Hopefully I’ll never get such email again.

Johor Flood Relief: Report

THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR YOUR AMAZING CONTRIBUTIONS! IT’S LOOKING LIKE WE HAVE A RUNAWAY SUCCESS!! IT’S SNOWBALLING AWAY, WE HAVE FRIENDS IN SINGAPORE AND EVEN RAFIL (who are currently in Perth) PLANNING TO SEND US MONEY AND MORE!

LATEST: I-Lann, Erna, Faizal & Iwan arrived back in KL Monday morning 5 AM. Lots of stories was told to all of us in the house then, including the time when some village representatives asked for TVs and computers! TVs and computers? Can you imagine that?

Anyway, a long report is being written by I-Lann & Erna, and tonnes of pictures by Faizal will be put up here soon.

Pix: taken Saturday, 20th Jan between 6 to 8 AM

Load up!

The convoy left my house at around 9 AM with I-Lann, Erna, Erna’s brother Iwan, Taysy, Taysy’s brother Wai Lam, Faizal T and the lorry driver. We woke up really early (it was still very dark) and load up everything really fast, and cleaned up all the space in my front room. Beside those mentioned above, others who helped load the vehicles were Shammir, Ahmad Ayen, Stick and Sarah.

Actually we worked through the night packing up, just like the night before, till about 2/3 AM. Both occasions were filled with much fun, laughter, food, drinks, music (from Otis Redding to Marvin Gaye to Billie Holiday to the stoner kings, Sleep) and films (Monty Python’s Life of Brian and The Big Lebowski).

Those who helped (apart from those mentioned) includes Nizang, Rizie, Ashirazi, Ujay, Jing, our neighbour Rose, Azmir, Citi, Kid (not Kidzwan!) & her friend, and more which I will find out their names and furnish here soon enough. (note; guys if you’re reading this do mail me and tell!)

By this morning, just before the convoy to Pontian left the house, our cash collection stood at RM3,216.40!! RM500 from that will be going to a family who needs it most in Kota Tinggi.

Items which we’ve packed: FOOD (lots and lots of mineral water, canned food, rice, instant noodles, milk, etc. including cat and dog food for people’s pets!), CLOTHING (pants. shorts, jeans, kain batik, kain pelikat, shirts, blouse, hats, kids and babies clothing etc.), SCHOOL ITEMS (school bags, pencils, pens, books, exercise books, crayons, etc.), TOILETRIES (soap, toothbrushes, sanitary pads, talcum powder etc.), MEDICINES, KITCHEN UTENSILS and so on. A lot of stuff.

Again, we all would like to THANK every single one of you who donated the things, the time, the man power, the money, the phone credit, the petrol, etc. etc.

Hugs from all of us!

The Evens in Kuala Lumpur?

imageDear People,

I’m now talking to Ian MacKaye (Fugazi & Minor Threat) and Amy Farina (The Warmers) on the possibilities of bringing their new band, THE EVENS, here to Kuala Lumpur to do a show or two in early March, right after their tour of Australia and New Zealand.

The Evens @ Dischord
interview here

I’m wondering (loudly) if many of you good people would be interested enough support and come to the shows.

Your support would make it all worthwhile as it may take a lot of effort and a bit of money to make it work. So I’m wondering how many of you would be interested to see them play.

Basically, the question is: Would you come to the show?

Do write and tell me, so I can gauge what’s the interest is like.

thank you in advance,

Joe Kidd

UNDER CONSTRUCTION!

RECONSTRUCTION TIME:
The site is now utilising the latest widget-enabled Wordpress built and I’m changing the whole look. If you have any suggestion, do write in the comments. At the moment, I’m tweaking this blue-orange look and working on the banner. Things should be back to normal in the next few days, hopefully with new areas such as a gig calendar, advert boxes for bands, distros or labels to announce their products and also a box where you can listen to a weekly radio-stream. Lots of work to be done!

BTW; Flo is now busy doing a punk’n'rock’n'roll fanzine called DG-OD (Degeneration Overdrive) based in Montreal. I have given away many copies of this zine at the last Radio Malaya show and I still have a few left with me. Those who want it, gimme a holler!

Ricecooker Spawns A Forum (Again!)

Twice we had it here before and both died horrible deaths. Now we have another attempt. If you go here or just click on the “forum” at the top of the page, you’ll see the new forum page.

It’s courtesy of a new plug-in for wordpress, which unlike the previous forum boards used, doesn’t need you to re-register. If you’ve registered for ricecooker to comment, then you should be able to join the forum and yakk away. No more hassles like before (I hope!).

Anyway, do test it out (use the “testiscular..” one to do testings lah) and create your own topics by clicking on the “Post New Topic” link on the right hand side. Please keep it to the main subjects (i.e. if it’s just some idle talk, use the “Borak borak” thread). and please be civil.

I haven’t tested it on windows machines and IE and there are still a lot f tweaking to be done (cosmetically that is), and the plug-in is also very new, so it’ll get better.

cheers…

Intermission Over…

Well, folks! I’m back in town (three days ago). Ricecooker will resume normal operation from now on (my streamyx was offline till today). Sorry to all the organisers who sent me their event flyers these past few weeks. I can’t get my powerbook on-line in Sabah, so no FTP, rendering me helpless with only texts uploaded via some PCs at some computer centres in KK.

Anyway, on to the more pressing matters.

TV3 news announced tonight that a fatwa was issued today banning Black Metal, marked it as “haram”. Tough luck to all the desciples of the more satanic persuasions, either musical or further. So what does this “fatwa” entails? At the moment, I’m not sure. One thing we must worry about now is the question, “What is Black Metal to all these ulamaks?” Where are the lines drawn, if there’s any? So far, as we all have seen and experienced, wearing black is Black Metal. Having titles with words such as “evil”, “black”, “hell”, “satan” and such is considered Black Metal. Having images suggesting the same, is Black Metal.

Some gig organisers have been using the disclaimer, “This is Not a Black Metal Gig” on their flyers. One gig happening next Sunday has the words “AntiDrugs Night”. Surely in the hope of deflecting the “connection” with Black Metal. Soon we will start seeing anarcho-punks in pink t-shirts! Looking at the bright side, I just hope the scene will suddenly flower into this multi-coloured, pyschedelic delight! Mass Separation in tie-dye t-shirts and bright yellow pants will surely make my day!

Anyway, exciting days ahead for sure!

cheers,

Joe
