Saturday, 27th September 2008: Ode to Apathy, The Substation, Singapore

97-SHIKI (Chicago, USA)
97-shiki play loud, weird, frantic, angular, underground/rock/punk/hardcore music. Sounding like a mashup of many of their previous bands, Fourth Rotor (Kammy Lee & Douglas Ward), V.Reverse (Patrick Scott and Douglas), Weather, Kill Sadie, My Lai (Patrick), HeWhoCorrupts , Kung Fu Rick (Ryan Durkin) to name a few.
It’s a band with four strong personalities that all get their ideas out in their driving, pulsing, cutting tunes. With a long shared background in the Chicago DiY underground music scene, 97-shiki is already touring and self releasing music. Playing out since spring 2008, look for 97-shiki to be making noise and venting their heads in basements, houses, clubs and halls all over the place in the months and years to come

Bands info:
NAO
Straddling the line between the classic punk energy of the legendary Fugazi and today’s manic metal/hardcore upstarts System Of A Down, you get the hard-hitting outfit NAO.
Arguably the most progressive band in the current Malaysian local Chinese independent scene, their politically charged live set, with its fair share of double pedal thumping, funkoid metal interludes, jarring dual guitar hammerings and spirited vocals, had fists pumping the air in glory.
Never far from voicing out social concerns and addressing anti-racial issues through its punk template, the band is rare breed unafraid of hitting a raw nerve.
CITIZENS OF ICE CREAM
If all that you wish to achieve, all that you desire, all that you wish would happen, transform as a whole to an ice-cream. And as you think you could take just one bite of it, it melts. And so you wish, hope and dream endlessly, until all your frustrations and hopes give presence to another fictional, beautiful, sweet ice-cream-like dream…
Let frustration be your drive, let the “ice-cream” be all that you hope for, even if you “know” it’s impossible, “believe” is the reason you dwell, the excuse for your devotion.
Hopes and desires make us “Citizens of Ice-Cream”.
DIAN BANG
An emerging band from the Malaysian Chinese indie music scene, Dian Bang consists of a girl and two guys who did their music practice in their bedroom and utilize laptops, geared up guitars and keyboards to create music at their live shows. They’re sound revolves around a lot of Electro-shoegazing and experimental pop, inspired mostly by acts like Slowdive, Kraftwerk and Kitaro.

Taring Babi is an independent community, also known as Marjinal, AFRA (Anti Fasis, Anti Rasis), and Tempe Quality.
Mike, one of the founders of Marjinal says that one of their main aims is to fight against discrimination of all kinds by exposing the everyday discrimination against punks. ‘Because we have tattoos and piercings, people, and particularly the media, label us to try to dismiss our message. Punk is not a fashion statement. It is a way of life which is about being independent and opposing injustice.’
Marjinal has been agitating with their music and art in the outskirts of Jakarta for almost ten years. As a community, they are committed to fighting for equality and justice and often joins forces with local bands, media collectives, and workers’ organisations to build events and campaigns that are inclusive and creative. Their homebase also serves as a distro where they sell tshirts, badges, pins, and albums they have made, as well as a printing studio.
This is a FREE screening of a 36-minutes documentary made by Mash Vacano in 2005. Mash will be together with us at the screening and will talk about her experiences with the Marjinal Kolektif.

from jabesoud:
The latest CD from Klangmutationen, “Schwarzhagel”, is due out on the 13th of September (this Saturday) on Utech Records. Available in 750 copies.
Artwork by Stephen Kasner. Audio mastering by James Plotkin (ex-OLD!!!).
“Klangmutationen are an mystery. More could be said about what their music isn’t than what it is. Hailing from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the underground experimentalists pierce the veils of Eastern and Western music. Recalling early sets on FMP as well as the Takayanagi/Abe axis of Japanese free music, Schwarzhagel is the sound of a spirit falling past its own life after death, forever.”

Aku anak zaman sputnik, zaman soyuz, zaman manusia naik kebulan.
Ayahku melarang, tetapi larangannya tidaklah begitu keras seperti amaran ibuku.

from our friend Azharr:
Punggok Rindukan Bulan (88minit / Malaysia / 2008)
trailer: here
Sidi is a scrappy boy living in a condemned tenement. His escapades revolve around avoiding school and hallucinatory scenes of night fishing with his father. Malaysian director Azharr Rudin’s first film is a formally daring mood piece that meditates on the meaning of leaving one’s past behind. - Vancouver International Film Festival 08
Showing at GSC Pavilion KL, Mid Valley, 1 Utama and Gurney Plaza from 25 September > 8 Oktober 2008

Dear people, as you may have heard three citizens have been detained under the Internal Security Act (ISA) yesterday and last night. They are Raja Petra Kamaruddin (RPK - the 58-year-old editor of popular newsportal Malaysia Today), together with journalist Tan Hoon Cheng (a Sin Chiew Daily News reporter) and Seputih MP Teresa Kok. The question now is who’s next?
On top of that, the government had also issued “show cause” letters to three local newspapers!
Read all about the arrests here.
All I want to say is that it’s nothing out of the ordinary for the current administration. I’m not surprised at all. Scared animals, cornered and wounded would swing its claws at anything; by being one, they are hoping we would react the same and take upon the streets in anger and frustration. Lets not fall into that obvious trap!

All in, tune in but never drop out! Chill & stay free, boss! Let the belligerent racist, fascist fukkers gobble each other up!
As we watch the sharks inevitable feeding frenzy, lets entertain ourselves by singing along to this song:
HANTURAYA PUTRAJAYA - Carburetor Dung | Download HERE
Suara mu yang lantang melawan, siapa punya?!
Rumah mu yang indah tersergam, siapa punya??!
Hidup mu yang kenyang senang-lenang, siapa punya???!
Kebebasan mu yang ada, siapa punya?!
Cuba-cuba naikkan suara,
Aku heret, aku ikat, aku tangkap, aku sumbat!
Cuba-cuba naikkan kepala,
Aku ketuk, aku lepuk, aku luku, aku cantas!
Cuba-cuba celikkan mata,
Aku cucuk, aku sembur, aku genyeh, aku jolok!
Jangan lupa!
Aku yang berkuasa!
Pagi hari kan ku terkam!
Pintu rumah kan ku terjang!
Kan ku berkas, kan ku bungkus!
Kan ku heret mu kedalam!
Jangan kau lupa!
Jangan kau alpa!
Ingat lah semua!
AKU YANG BERKUASA!
