About Us

this is our megaphone and we’ll use it as we like.

ricecooker is mainly about promoting and documenting DIY + indie culture, especially its creative, critical and political expression and the people behind it; especially here in the Southeast Asian region.

by “DIY + indie”, we mean the “do it yourself” + “independent” creative scene in general – those who are going at it without looking for or in need of support from the usual establishments that are entrenched in the governmental and corporate sector.

that said, we are not dogmatic nor we are hardliners. Whatever we do, we try to actively pursue it within reason and of course, all of that comes complete with the usual inconsistencies and contradictions underpinning our day-to-day existence.

being proud Malaysians, we also give it all a bit of slack lah!

to know more about the ideas and their permutations which informed and influenced ricecooker, do visit these links:

DIY Ethic | Punk Rock | Punk Subculture | Punk Ideology | Indie Culture | Indie Music | Experimental Rock | Counterculture | Anarcho | Food Not Bombs | Anti-Corporate Activism | Anti-Consumerism | A for Art | thousands more ism-skisms & some headless whatevers, etc.

all of which are constantly tempered with our love for the blessed Monty Python, Lenny, 周星馳 and Spaghetti Westerns.

THE PORTAL

this blog-based portal is mainly run by Joe Kidd (Carburetor Dung / The Ricecooker Shop / The Abang Guard); with constantly absent co-editor, Kid (Propamedia / Kah Roe Shi / Mass Separation) and contributions from Hishamuddin Rais (The Handsome Rais), Nizang (Nervhous Records / Dum Dum Tak) and tens more kindred friends.

we are always in need of contributions from anyone interested. Do email us!

THE SHOP

we also run a shop situated at the mezzanine floor of the Annexe, Central Market, Kuala Lumpur.

it is (hopefully) open daily from 11 AM to 11 PM and we stock creative cultural products from the scene (and also some classics and mainstream stuff which we like lah!)

the shop is being run by Joe, Bebex (Black Boots) & Aiman (Civil Disorder / Dum Dum Tak) with immense help from local distros especially Shammir (Do Not Consume / Sangsara / All This While), Kid (Propamedia), Wan Hazril (Cactus), Jimmy (Lompat) and more extremely helpful people too many to list here.

Always Look on the Bright Side of Life | Monty Python
words and music by Eric Idle

Some things in life are bad
They can really make you mad
Other things just make you swear and curse.
When you’re chewing on life’s gristle
Don’t grumble, give a whistle
And this’ll help things turn out for the best…

And…always look on the bright side of life…
Always look on the light side of life…

If life seems jolly rotten
There’s something you’ve forgotten
And that’s to laugh and smile and dance and sing.
When you’re feeling in the dumps
Don’t be silly chumps
Just purse your lips and whistle - that’s the thing.

And…always look on the bright side of life…
Always look on the light side of life…

For life is quite absurd
And death’s the final word
You must always face the curtain with a bow.
Forget about your sin - give the audience a grin
Enjoy it - it’s your last chance anyhow.

So always look on the bright side of death
Just before you draw your terminal breath

Life’s a piece of shit
When you look at it
Life’s a laugh and death’s a joke, it’s true.
You’ll see it’s all a show
Keep ‘em laughing as you go
Just remember that the last laugh is on you.

And always look on the bright side of life…
Always look on the right side of life…
(Come on guys, cheer up!)
Always look on the bright side of life…
Always look on the bright side of life…
(Worse things happen at sea, you know.)
Always look on the bright side of life…
(I mean - what have you got to lose?)
(You know, you come from nothing - you’re going back to nothing.
What have you lost? Nothing!)
Always look on the right side of life…
(ad lib..)

the song is in the KEY A minor and here’s the rest of the notes:

verse:
Am G
Am G
Am G E7
A7 D7

chorus:
G E7 Am D7
G E7 A7 D7
